Onnis, Lacombe and the marksmen of French football
Ligue 1's all-time scoring chart is topped by an adopted hero: the Argentine Delio Onnis, whose 299 goals across the 1970s and 1980s have never been matched. He edges out the greatest French scorer of them all, Bernard Lacombe (255).
The list is rich with post-war French talent, Hervé Revelli (216), Roger Courtois (210) and the World Cup legend Just Fontaine among them. Its most striking modern entry is Kylian Mbappé (191), who reached seventh on the all-time list for Monaco and PSG before leaving for Real Madrid, an extraordinary tally for a player still in his twenties.
French football has always attracted prolific imports too, from Sweden's Gunnar Andersson to Morocco's Hassan Akesbi, but it is Onnis and Lacombe who remain the two names every Ligue 1 striker still chases.
