Piola, Totti and a century of Italian goals

Serie A has long been a league defined by defence, which makes its great goalscorers all the more revered. At the top sits Silvio Piola, whose 274 goals between the 1920s and 1950s remain the benchmark more than 70 years on.

The modern icon is Francesco Totti (250), the one-club legend who spent his entire career with Roma. Foreign stars have left their mark too: Sweden's Gunnar Nordahl (225) and the Brazilian-Italian José Altafini (216) both feature near the top, while Italy's golden generation is represented by Roberto Baggio (205) and Alessandro Del Piero.

More recent forwards keep the tradition alive, Antonio Di Natale (209), Ciro Immobile (201) and Fabio Quagliarella all climbed into the all-time top 15, proving that even in the home of catenaccio, great strikers still find a way.
