A trophy shared by just eight nations

In nearly a century of World Cups, only eight countries have ever lifted the trophy, and none from outside Europe and South America. At the top sits Brazil, whose five titles between 1958 and 2002 set a benchmark no one has matched, built on golden generations from Pelé to Ronaldo.

Europe's giants press close behind: Germany and Italy on four each, with Argentina, champions again in 2022 behind Lionel Messi, on three. France and Uruguay share two apiece, and in 2026 Spain doubled their tally, beating Argentina in the final to add to their 2010 crown.

England's lone triumph came on home soil in 1966, one of six times the host nation has won. From Uruguay's inaugural 1930 title to Spain's 2026 success, the roll of champions is a short but storied list of football's greatest sides.
