Source: Wikipedia, “List of European Cup and UEFA Champions League finals” (performance by club), as of July 2026. Titles combine the European Cup (pre-1992) with the modern Champions League. Twenty-four different clubs have won the competition; clubs with a single title are not listed here.

Real Madrid and the kings of Europe

No club has mastered Europe's greatest competition like Real Madrid. Their 15 titles begin with the very first five European Cups, won consecutively from 1956 to 1960, and stretch to a modern dynasty that made the Spanish giants synonymous with the Champions League. No other club has more than seven.

Italy's AC Milan are the closest challengers on 7, level in history's memory with the Dutch and German sides that shaped the game, Bayern Munich and Liverpool both on 6, and the great Ajax team of the early 1970s on 4. Barcelona (5) complete the list of clubs with five or more European crowns.

The roll of honour also holds some of football's best stories: Nottingham Forest, English champions of Europe in 1979 and 1980, won both of their finals and never lost one; Benfica's back-to-back triumphs of 1961 and 1962 announced a golden age; and Paris Saint-Germain finally joined the club's elite, following their maiden 2025 title by retaining the trophy in 2026.

Spanish clubs have lifted the trophy more than any other nation, led by Real Madrid and Barcelona, with Italy and England close behind. From the black-and-white era of Alfredo Di Stéfano to today's galaxy of superstars, winning the European Cup remains the truest mark of a great club side.
