Few leagues in Europe are as tightly controlled as the Primeira Liga. Benfica lead the way with 38 titles, the foundation of the club's status as Portugal's most successful side, while Porto sit close behind on 31 after their 2025-26 triumph, and Sporting CP complete the Big Three on 21.
Between them, these three clubs have won all but two Portuguese championships ever contested. The rivalry between Lisbon's Benfica and Sporting and the northern power of Porto defines the season every year, with the title almost never leaving the three.
Only two other clubs have ever broken through: Belenenses, champions in 1945-46, and Boavista, whose 2000-01 title remains one of the great upsets in Portuguese football. No side outside the Big Three has managed it since.
